A Little Contemplation

The other day, my boss sent around an article from the Harvard Business Review, Turning 60: The Twelve Most Important Lessons I’ve Learned So Far.

I decided to overlook the fact that I have just gotten over the shock of officially being in my late twenties and consider some life lessons I’ve experienced in my 27 short years.

  1. People change – embrace it. Our twenties are a turbulent time. We go from college students, to young professionals to, in some cases, husbands or wives. We HAVE to change to survive! In just ten short years, we experience such major life changes that we must embrace how we change and how those we love change. One of life’s biggest challenges is understanding that we can’t keep life as it is or people as they are. We have to understand that people are meant to grow and change. Guess that is why they call it growing up!
  2. Your job may not be your career. Post graduation, a job is everything. After four years (maybe five or six, this is a judgement-free zone) of studying for the real world, I finally made my entrance. Guess what? It wasn’t all that grand! I jumped around from PR to Events to Marketing and never stopped questioning along the way. Even now, I am incredibly happy in my job, but I am not sure that it is going to be my career. Don’t expect each job to be your life’s purpose. A job is something you do, not who you are. Keep your long-term goals in mind and view each job as a stepping stone to achieving them.
  3. Appreciate everything. The good, the bad, the ugly; they all have an impact. Life moves on before we know it, all that we’ll have left is memories of that time when. Savor every moment. Appreciate every person, thing and occurrence. Regardless of how big or small, they all matter.
  4. Always consider perspective. Your perspective is your reality. Sometimes, all that is needed is a shift in perspective to view a situation or circumstance in a whole new light. You have the power to determine what kind of impact you let things have on your life.

Still contemplating? Here are Tony Schwartz’s life lessons from the article in the Harvard Business Review:

  1. The more we know about ourselves, the more power we have to behave better.
  2. Notice the good.
  3. Let go of certainty.
  4. Never seek your value at the expense of someone else’s.
  5. Do the most important thing first int he morning and you’ll never have an unproductive day.
  6. It’s possible to be excellent at anything, but nothing valuable comes easy and discomfort is part of growth.
  7. The more behaviors you intentionally make automatic in your life, the more you’ll get done.
  8. Slow down.
  9. The feeling of having enough is magical.
  10. 10. Do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do, and don’t expect anything in return.
  11. Add more value in the world than you’re using up.
  12. Savor every moment – even the difficult ones. It all goes so fast.

Do you have Klout?

Clout ˈklau̇t: Pull, influence

Do you have it in this day and age of social media? How can you tell? As a blogger, I found this question particularly relevant. Then, I stumbled across an article in Wired magazine, “What Your Klout Score Really Means.” What the heck is Klout?

Klout is a company dedicated to determining the influence of every online user. Using specific criteria, each online user is given a Klout Score. If you have a Facebook account or twitter account, you have a Klout score, you just might not know it. According to Klout, your score is composed of the following measurements:

  • True Reach: How many people you influence
  • Amplification: How much you influence them
  • Network Impact: The influence of your network

Why does this matter?

As someone who blogs, my Klout score matters because the higher it is, the more successful I am at reaching and influencing people. If you aren’t a blogger, why should you care about a Klout score? A few reasons:

1) If you are in any type of Marketing, Communications, Social Media or consumer-driven profession, then you want to know your Klout score. Before you know it, your Klout score will become part of interview criteria. Potential employes are going to want to know the power you have to influence audiences and your Klout score is a direct reflection of your ability.

2) You can earn free stuff! Yes, REALLY! Good free stuff too – top influencers have even earned laptops and airline tickets! You can earn discounts in various categories, ranging from entertainment to food to retail. The idea behind the free perks is that if you are an influencer, people will look to you for your opinion of a brand. If the brand gives you something for a discount or for free, then you are more likely to share your thoughts on the brand or product. So get to it, folks!

3) You can’t fight the future. Social Media is driving consumer marketing. Gone are the days of traditional marketing. Instead, we look to the people we know and trust to tell us whether a product or service is worth our time and money. It’s time to embrace the future of consumer-driven consumption!

Get started on Klout here. At least check out your score to see where you stand!

Quick Updo: Quick Hair Tutorial

I came across this fabulous resource to share! The blog, She Lets Her Hair Down, is run by a Parisian stylist named Rubi and, you guessed it, manes are her main attraction! Her blog offers all kinds of new styles, tips and tutorials on some key looks. I love the look of a simple bun, but with my crazy thick hair, I need some serious reinforcement. Voila – check out Rubi’s version of a classic bun! All the steps (below) are clear and easy to understand. Be sure to head over to She Lets Her Hair Down to see what other fun resources you can use!

Directions:
1. Flip your head over and rake your fingers through your hair to make it all go towards the top of your head, leaving out a bang section.

2. Once all your hair is smoothly going up, tightly gather it in a fist at the top of your head.

3. Secure it with an elastic.

4. Split your pony tail in three sections. If your hair is fine you can lightly backcomb each section to make it bigger.

5. Hold one section up by the ends and then bring it down so it sits on your head. It will naturally fold onto itself.

6. Pin at the folds.

7. Repeat with the other two sections making sure to hide your hair pins and bobby pins.

8. Pin your bangs back so they connect to your bun and everything flows together.

Fantasizing over this J Crew Maxi Skirt

As you may have picked up on by now, I’m really digging these maxi-length skirts and dresses. They are fashionable, stylish, yet somehow effortless. They also offer endless possibilities! Throw one with a plain tshirt, a button up or a really great cropped jacket and you are ready to go! I personally love the color on the Jcrew version below. Check it out here.

This version is $118, but you can find some cheaper versions at Gap, Ann Taylor Loft and Forever 21. Since this is likely a passing trend, you don’t want to spend a fortune. However, I know I will find myself in one of these once a week for the duration of the spring, summer and fall, so I just might have to splurge!

My First HauteLook Purchase

I thought I’d go ahead and continue on this fashion and accessory trend and share my latest purchase (yes, another one)! I love statement necklaces so when I saw that HauteLook was having a statement necklace event, well I couldn’t be one to decline the invitation, now could I?

HauteLook is flash sale site, on par with Rue La La and Gilt Groupe, which offers high quality merchandise at a fraction of the price – provided you can join the sale promptly at 11 AM EST and get your merchandise in your online shopping bag faster than you can say “I have to have that!” Hautelook offers designer fashion and accessories – including jewelry (obviously), sunglasses and purses, and has expanded into home wares, beauty products, men’s and even children’s clothing.

I’ve ordered my fair share of goods from Rue La La and Gilt, but not HauteLook. I’ll be sure to give a detailed review upon receipt of my newest purchase. And, without any further ado, here she is:

Neon pops of color are perfect for the spring and I’ve been on the lookout for a tasteful, but bold statement necklace. Normally priced at $56.00, I got it for a steal at only $25.00 + $5.95 shipping and handling.

I am already dreaming up outfits which will be perfected by this lil’ gem!

Monday Motivation…

Monday’s always tend to present a bit of a challenge. This Monday is particularly difficult. I’ve just had the most incredible, fun-filled weekend with my closest friends and my twin who made a special trip to the District to visit. Incredible and fun-filled also tends to lead to exhausting, coupled with the fact that I drove my brother to the airport at 5 am this morning and some Spring Nor’Easter is trying to drown the DC-Metro area, and I am not really warming up to this Monday.

Now, I’m not going to complain. I am just going to find some sources of motivation to work hard for the money. Case in point:

What more could a girl want on a dreary day than a beautiful teal leather Kate Spade purse? Talk about a pick me up!

This “Leslie” purse from the Cobble Hill collection will set you back a smooth $348 and comes in my obvious favorite, teal, orange and black. There is a larger version of the “Leslie” but it doesn’t come in teal. There are a few others in the Cobble Hill collection that come in bright spring colors, too.

Check them out here if you want some motivation of your own!

Gap Nautical Maxi Dress

Just last night, I picked up this gem at Gap. It is a bit more than I’d normally spend on a maxi dress, but it was my birthday so I thought I’d go ahead and treat myself! I’m already thinking of all of the different ways to wear this dress and the possibilities are endless! Maxi dresses look great on their own, but can take on a whole new life when paired with the right accessories.

Pair it with your favorite colorful, cropped jacket and a bold statement necklace and you can tackle a day out on the town or a date night! Check the dress out at Gap here.

Holy Hiatus!

As you know, I took a little extended vacation from the blogosphere throughout the past month. This was largely self-imposed, as I have had several changes of the personal kind brewing. In the past month, I’ve ended a job and started a career, spent some much needed time with family and been spending an inordinate amount of time with the newest furry addition to our family (notice, I said FURRY; furry = puppy, not child).

The self-imposed part of my blogging break was to give myself some time and space to enjoy the exciting transitions and not feel the burning need to write about them immediately. That, and of course the fact that I have been busier than usual, as staring a new job doesn’t usually afford you the time to type away during the workday. At least not for the first few weeks.

I’m happy to say I’m back. And no, this won’t be a post simply dedicated to letting the world wide web know I am back to blogging.

In this past month, I’ve had the opportunity to see – and feel – how impactful change is in life. People are instinctively afraid of change. The fear of the unknown is a much more intimidating adversary than routine, no matter how dreadful, miserable or painful. It is much easier to accept what we know than it is to try to do predict what we don’t.

However, by shifting perspective, it is evident that change is our most valuable asset. Our generation tends to get caught up in circumstance. We focus on what we don’t have, what we wish we could have and how unfair it is that we don’t have it. Not only is this depressing, but it renders us powerless over our own lives. We forget that we have the ability to change what we don’t like – and that can be our circumstance or our attitude. Change is an active decision to empower ourselves.

All this philosophical mumbo-jumbo is spouting from my own recent experience, which is why I feel the need to share it here. During the past year and a half of my life, my personal life has been in the best place possible while my professional life has been pretty dismal. After a year in the most stressful, least rewarding job I could have ever dreamed, I began to see the true toll it had taken on me. I had changed in a bad way. I was negative, cynical, stressed, worn out and, worst of all, lacked any real confidence in myself. I decided to make a change. Fast forward to earlier this month, the first day of my new job, and I am happier than I’ve ever been – and would have never dreamed I’d have been had I not decided to face the unknown.

My point is simply this: we are in charge of our own happiness and we should constantly challenge ourselves to make the necessary changes to achieve happiness in our lives. All it takes is a little change in perspective, which I’ve been fortunate enough to find in the past few months.

Some Gettysburg Love!

Alright kids, this is gonna be a quick post! My darling hubby decided to surprise me with a weekend jaunt to Annapolis to celebrate Valentine’s Day since he’ll be out of town next week. We’re getting ready to explore this adorable little town, so I have to make it a quick post. I promise I’ll take lots of pictures to share, but for now, I figured I’d stay in the historical vein and share some pictures from a recent trip to Gettysburg.

Gettysburg isn’t even a hop, skip and a jump away from DC. It’s more of just a hop and maybe a half a skip. In about two hours travel time from DC, you’ll find yourself smack dab in the middle of historical battlefields, storefronts advertising Civil War memorabilia and, of course, just your average Civil War reenactor. I know Gettysburg isn’t exactly the top destination to pop on a DCer’s radar; we ended up there for a friend’s wedding. However, it was a very cost effective, easy escape from reality.

The Historic Gettysburg Hotel

We stayed at the Historic Gettysburg Hotel,a Best Western property, smack dab in the middle of quaint downtown Gettysburg. For $100 a night, our room was decent enough. The hotel is very old, so don’t expect any bells and whistles, but the staff was nice (and in historic costume) and the rooms were clean. We were within a few blocks of cute restaurants, shops and a coffee shop with tons of character.

We wanted to leave Gettysburg with an improved knowledge of American history, so on Saturday, we ventured out to the Gettysburg battlefield. Upon arrival, we realized we didn’t have enough time to see everything we wanted to, so we set out on a walking tour of the battlefield site nearby. Here are some highlights:

A view from the walkway of the battlefield.
Some information about the battlefield.
Weaponry.
A fellow battlefield admirer contemplating what went wrong...
The whole gang.

All in all, we had a fantastic time. I recommend the Lincoln Diner, around the corner from the hotel, for some stick to your ribs grub and the Ragged Edge for a caffeine buzz, quick bite and free refills. Crazy concept, right? FREE REFILLS. Needless to say, I was a happy, albeit jittery, customer. Go ahead, give Gettysburg a try! Convenient, cheap and chock-full of things to do, it is an easy alternative to a weekend of the same old DC thing!

Calling all Foodies and Winos!

The majority of my friends could be classified in either one of these two categories. They are in luck – they can nourish both tendencies this weekend at the 12th Annual Washington DC International Wine & Food Festival! Some of the culinary world’s top names will be exhibiting. Wineries, distilleries and unique food vendors will be hocking their goods and putting them on display for attendees. Taking place at the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center (1300 Pennsylvania Ave, NW), you can work off all the calories you’ll consume from the tastings just by walking from one end to the other!

The Wine & Food festival kicks off tonight with a “Sommelier Showdown” and the fun continues throughout the entire weekend. Tickets for tonight’s event are pricey and hard to come by as only a select few are released to the public. For $150 per person, buyers will get to watch as top metro-area sommeliers compete to see who can identify wines with mystery labels.

Friday’s event, “Cupid’s Not Stupid, Cocktails to Fall For,” held at Aria Pizzeria (housed in the Reagan Building), will pit the city’s top mixologists against one another as they compete to make the best cocktail. For $55, the audience will get to watch on and sample their creations, along with some light snacks, beer and wine. The mixologists are:

Gina Chersevani
Rachel Sergi, Jack Rose Dining Saloon
Ben Wiley, America Eats Tavern
Youssef, J & G Steakhouse
Dennis Burns, Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center

And, on to the main event! Grand Tastings are on Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm and provide access to 500 “rare, unique and loved wines” from wineries across the globe. Sample food from international artisans and, of course, the city’s best restaurants! You’ll leave full, happy and armed with a brand, spankin’ new wine glass courtesy of the DC International Wine & Food Festival. Ticket options include $145 for both days or $85 for Saturday and $80 for Sunday. Sure, it ain’t cheap but sometimes it is ok to shell out to culture yourself a bit!

Seriously, what else are you doing this weekend? No, getting a head start on your taxes does NOT count! Surprise your hunny with an early Valentine’s Day date or just enjoy some quality time with good friends by switching it up a bit!  If you plan to go to the Gilt City Warehouse sale, then you have a reprieve. Otherwise, get your butt down there and get a real taste of DC!
