UGG Bridal Collection? ugh.

UGG has just released it’s new “I Do” bridal collection. Blushing brides have their pick of two boot options or a sandal/slipper option. Ranging from $80 – $245, the styles have blue soles and white, blue and/or sparkle and shimmer accents.

I have to say, I’m not sure if I can jump aboard this trend train. I’ve seen winter weddings in which the bride and bridesmaids are wearing matching UGG boots for photos and sure, it makes for an adorable photo op. But, to wear down the aisle? Not so much – particularly when they look as cheesy as these three options. Sorry, but if I’m being honest, I think UGG is trying a bit too hard here. However, I commend them for trying to leverage the bridal market, a market segment that has proven to make extremely irrational decisions on a regular basis. And yes, I say that wholeheartedly because I was admittedly part of that market segment. 🙂

Picasso’s Got Nothin’ on You!

I’m always on the lookout for new, unorthodox things to do in DC. New York may be the city that doesn’t sleep, but DC is the city that will never bore. From street performances, to art installations, to jazz in the sculpture garden to Screen at the Green – there is always something unique happening in our nation’s capital.

The newest kid on the block? ArtJamz Paint in the Park! Every Thursday in June, ArtJamz invites anyone and everyone with a creative inkling to pick up a paintbrush and be inspired by the city’s great outdoors that is Farragut Square Park. For $30, future picasso’s receive a 16×20 stretch canvas on which to paint your creation, an easel and of course, all of the materials you’ll need to assuage your creative juices, acrylic paints, brushes, etc. Top it off with live music from the Golden Triangle Summer Concert Series and your inner artist will practically jump onto the canvas!

Purchase your tickets in advance online to snag your spot. Blankets and chairs are recommended!

If Thursday’s don’t work for you, check out some of ArtJamz studios sessions!

Don’t worry if you have no natural artistic ability – just get out there and have some fun with friends! Live music, sunshine and good people are all you really need to have a great time!

No Plans Tonight? Check out Trina Turk for BR!

DC ladies looking for something to do tonight?

Head over to the Banana Republic in Georgetown at the corner of Wisconsin and M Street (3200 M Street, NW) at 5 pm to be one of the first to view the new Trina Turk for Banana Republic Collection in stores. Online sneak peeks were available for Gilt Groupe members and Facebook fans, so I can confirm that there are some majorly fabulous pieces available for purchase. Trina Turk’s signature bold colors and prints paired with Banana’s classic silhouettes is a match made in fashionista heaven. As most designer collaborations go, the prices are higher than what you would typically see in Banana, but that is to be expected. The 60 piece collection is said to be inspired by Palm Springs, read: deco inspired, bright colors and prints.

Use your Banana, Gap or Old Navy card for any purchase of $100 or more and you can score a free limited edition Trina Turk bangle.

The store event starts at 5 pm and shoppers can enjoy complimentary refreshments while they shop. Cocktails and shopping? Two of my favorite things – I’m in!

The Pentagon City Banana Republic is also hosting an in-store event. To see where else they are hosting events, click here.

Buy this Basic!

When you find that perfect basic, it is  nothing short of a crime to keep it to yourself. So, without further adieu, I want to introduce you to the perfect basic layering tank.

The perfect layering piece.

I came across it on a recent shopping trip as an afterthought, already elated over the blouse I’d found on sale at Anthropologie. Now, dare I say, I am much more excited over this tank top. So excited, I had to wear it the day I got it.

The fabric is so comfortable and soft you could sleep in it, but trust me, you won’t want to. The tank is long enough to tuck into a skirt and stay in place so you don’t end up with bunched fabric that makes you look like you may have gained 5 fat rolls in a twenty minutes. Anthropologie markets it as a “reversible” tank since one side is a vneck and the other is a scoop neck. However, there is a tag in the scoop neck side, making it difficult to really reverse. I’m going to try my hand at cutting out the tag when I wear it next because let’s face it, everyone loves a two for one deal. It is perfect on its own or as a layering piece to add a pop of color or coverage under a sheer shirt.

The top comes in nine colors online and I saw another two in the store, ranging from brights to basic. They are $24 a pop, which is a tad pricier than i’d like to pay for a basic, but if it lasts (which remains to be seen since it is a new purchase) then it is worth it. I’ll be purchasing another 2-3 colors, checking out the quality over the next few months and then hopefully acquiring a few more.

Tips:

  • The top is very form-fitting, so you might want to go a size up if you don’t want it too tight.
  • Since it is form-fitting, make sure you consider the bra you wear. Lace might show through the fabric.
  • The comments recommend to wash the top in a delicate cycle to prevent pilling.

Sharpen Your Pencil Skirt IQ

The perfect pencil skirt is a must-have for this summer season. Pencil skirts manage to make women look completely professional, yet still glamorous – and even downright sexy. Be sure to stay away from the sexy look for the office though, ladies!

The best part, pencil skirts are incredibly versatile. Pair a bright pink version with a crisp white button up or a print version with a plain, v-neck tee shirt. Both looks are business casual, but chic. Add a statement necklace for some personality or a blazer to jazz up the professionalism.

Finding the right fit is the hardest part. Some cuts can be too tight in the butt, which makes for an unflattering look. Be sure to check out your backside before purchasing 😉 Here’s a tip from your’s truly, if you have some voluptuous curves, try Ann Taylor Loft’s versions.

The Perfect Pant

Finding a really fantastic pair of pants is no easy task. Particularly if you are gifted in the same way as Kim Kardashian. And no, I don’t mean gifted in the absolutely gorgeous, having millions of dollars, an amazing wardrobe, two failed marriages and courtship with Kanye West kind of way. I mean gifted in the large-ass department, which I so happen to be.

Well, have no fear my fellow baby-got-back lovers, your perfect pant exists! J Crew’s Minnie pant is cute, slightly cropped and totally cool. The slight stretch fabric makes them work appropriate and easily transitionable to play. They pair perfectly with a blazer and button-up or your favorite supper sleeveless top. Wear them in any season, with pumps, flats, boots or sandals, a sweater or a tank top. The Minnie pant is endlessly versatile and a wardrobe staple. Perfectly on trend, J Crew offers them in a variety of bright colors, as well as necessary neutrals. My advice – get yourself a pair in a neutral color and then pick up the red or orchid to add a pop of color that will last through the Fall Season!

Put your best face forward

I love makeup. I’ve never been one of those people who has to “put my face on” every time I leave the house. I go to the gym makeup-free. My husband sees me in all my makeup-less glory.

But, I love makeup. MAC, Stila, Lorac, Covergirl, Maybelline, TART – they all found their way into my makeup bag, basket and drawer. Yes, I have all three. A girl never knows which trend she is going to rock on any given day. She must be prepared to be dewy and fresh-faced or bronzed and smokey-eyed.

Any good look starts with great skin. My skincare regime used to be simple. Wash my face with some water before bed and dab on some tinted moisturizer by day. Ah, the ease of being young. Now that I am in my late twenties (gasp!), things have gotten significantly more complicated. I see the traces of wrinkles forming and no matter how much sleep I get I still look like I’ve pulled an all-nighter. Like any good quarter life crisis-er, I’ve been trying any and every product I can that claims to fight age, wrinkles, or insert-any-minor-imperfection here. I

I am still on the search for my fountain of youth product. However, my late-twenties skin has also left me in need in the makeup department, which is significantly more fun for my makeup-loving self than this wrinkle business. I’ve noticed I need a bit more coverage than offered by tinted moisturizer, but I absolutely hate, hate, hate foundation. I’ve tried so many variations, but they always feel heavy, look fake and make me look like a Vegas showgirl. After doing some exploration and some excess purchasing, I finally found my savior – Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. Cream!

You might have heard of the B.B. trend – the B’s stand for Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm, depending on the product. It’s a product concept that made its way over from several Asian countries (namely Korea).

Garnier’s B.B. Cream combines “advanced skincare” along with “immediate skin perfecting coverage.”

What the heck does that really mean?

The cream promises to cover, quench, protect (SPF 15 – a must!) and perfect dullness, redness and splotchiness.

OH – and it is only $12.

Too good to be true? Maybe. All I can attest to so far is that this product provides just the right amount of coverage to function as a light foundation, without feeling like a foundation. I’d liken it to a step up from a tinted moisturizer and a step down from foundation. For all of us ladies who are fall in the Goldilocks category of face makeup, this cream is just right! Since I’ve been using the product (about a month), I have noticed an overall improvement in the brightness of my skin, but in all fairness this could be due to any of the other aforementioned products I’ve been trying.

After reading the product reviews, I’ve noticed some women use this before applying a foundation, which might be worth a try if you are a foundation kind of gal. If you’re not, use this with a bit of bronzer and/or blush and you will be ready to take on the day.

Some tips:

  • A little goes a long way! I usually only need about 2 pea-sized dollops, one for my forehead and nose, another for my cheeks.
  • It comes in two colors – light/medium and medium/deep. The light/medium works for fair to tan complexions, just layer the product. The medium/deep works on darker skin tones, but I came across several complaints that the medium/deep does not work for African American skin tones.
  • If you have oily skin, this product might not be for you. My skin is pretty normal, not oily, not dry, a bit on the sensitive side. I haven’t had any issues, but some reviewers mentioned it made their skin more oily.
  • The product is scented. I find it pleasurable and it disappears after just a few minutes. However, if you do not like scented products, steer clear!
  • It is sold out in many local CVS stores. Friends have told me they’ve had trouble finding it, so you might want to purchase online if you know which complexion category you fall into. Check out drugstore.com.

Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s Day is fast approaching! For those of you living under a hole, it is THIS Sunday, May 13th. Before your freak out, run to the nearest CVS to buy a cheesy Hallmark card to throw in the mail before the mailman comes, take a deep breath and look no further.

This is the first year that I have to buy for TWO moms and now two grandmothers. My mom is always easy. We have similar taste in clothing and anything from Ann Taylor Loft is an excellent bet. Luckily, they are running a 30% off promotion for all dresses, jewelry and cardigans. I picked up a very nice summery dress that I know she will be able to wear immediately in the hot Florida spring and summer sun. It can be dressed up for a date night with dad or even worn casual as a super cute beach cover up. Unfortunately, Ann Taylor Loft doesn’t have the dress on their website, but here are some other great options for your persual:

The S-M-L sizing makes this dress an easy purchase for even the most clueless of buyers!
Give mom the gift of style! These bright colors are totally in for summer!

Does the though of buying clothes for your mom make you want to run screaming in the other direction? Size, shape, cut, fit, style can all be too much to handle. However, the traditional candle set or Bath and Body Works gift basket also look a bit thoughtless. After all, it is the thought that counts! So put some thought into it, people!

There are two very important things in common with my mother in law. A love of wine and enjoying said wine outdoors. I wanted to get her something really special since it is our first Mother’s Day. After a lot of poking around, I came across the most ingenious invention since wine and dine plates – Steady Stick wine glass holders! That’s right, this lovely contraption holds on to your wine for you while you enjoy the great outdoors. I paired a few sets of these with some fancy citronella candles and bam, we’re in business! The most exciting part is that I get to test them out for myself when we head down there for Memorial Day!

Wine outdoors made easy!

I’m still making my way through several Mother’s Day Gift Guides to see what else is out there, but Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn are some nice places to start for creative homegoods!

Cinco de Mayo Plans?

The DC food truck scene has exploded as of late. Head over to Farragut Square any time between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm on a weekday and you’ll have no shortage of epicurean options to satisfy your taste buds. DCers Twitter feeds are inundated with updates on the latest location of Curbside Cupcakes, Fojol Brothers, and how could we forget Jose Andres’ Pepe. Sure, it’s a trend, but one that my inner fat kid can totally get on board with.

So, you can imagine when I heard that all of DC’s best food trucks would be in ONE LOCATION for 8 hours, I got just a little excited. Then I found it was at RFK Stadium and got a little less excited. However, I don’t think I can pass up the opportunity to enjoy all the DC food truck scene has to offer in one fell swoop at the Curbside Cookoff: Trucko de Mayo. Can’t resist either? Here are the details:

When: Saturday, May 5th (TOMORROW) from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm

Where: RFK Stadium, Lot 3 (Closest lot to the Metro), 2400 East Capitol Street SE, Washington, DC 20003

What: 40 of DC’s yummiest food truck vendors in one place accompanied by live music. Admission is free, food is not. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase and you can participate in a sweepstakes to win a free pass to a meal at every DCFTA food truck (Man vs. Food anyone?).

How to get there: The closest metro is Stadium Armory on the Orange/Blue line (but be careful of track work this weekend!) and parking is free in lots 4 and 5.

Photo courtesy of DC Food Trucks

I’d recommend bringing some cash in case some of the food vendors don’t take credit card. You don’t want to be left salivating at this event, folks! Hopefully I’ll make my way over there, but I have a very important meeting with a rooftop in Dupont, some margaritas and some great friends earlier in the day. Who knows how long I’ll be detained…

Derby Hats!

Anyone heading to the Kentucky Derby this weekend? It’s on my bucket list, but I won’t be going this year. I’ve had my fair share of horse race experiences at Gold Cup, Foxfields and Preakness. However, nothing quite compares to the headwear at the Derby! Need some ideas – look no further – and several options can be found at local stop Propper Topper!
